Chapter Eight

Sara

Hangovers weren’t exclusively a result of excessive drinking. She had a doozie of one and hadn’t touched half of what she was able to hold. Sex was undeniably the culprit. Their sordid affair continued well into the early morning hours and she’d slept only a few winks since. Funny enough, her partner managed to disappear during those few moments when her lids were closed. Now, her mind wouldn’t stop thinking about it—about him—about all of the times and ways they banged. The sex was truly incredible. That’s about as far as her brain cells were willing to go, or maybe they weren’t able to process past it.

“Mind blown. Poof. That man was as fine as frog hair.” Her fingers traced over her lips. Somehow she could still feel his touch, regardless of the fact they hadn’t done much kissing. She chuckled to herself softly.

And that was about as much reminiscing as she was allowed. She jumped up. It was time to hit the shower to start off what was shaping up to be a wonderful day.

She heaved a heavy sigh of relief as hundreds of tiny droplets hit her hair, soaking it thoroughly. Steam filled the bathroom, fogging the mirror. Heat seeped into every pore of her skin, cleansing it thoroughly. Her entire body relished in the feeling. It wasn’t quite as sensual as the previous night, but she delighted in every second anyway. Her body even begged for a few minutes more in the warming massage. Those requests were unfortunately denied though.

Knock!

The dial turned easily in her hand, the water flow ceasing to a few drips

Knock! Knock!

There was barely time to wrap a towel around herself.

“Coming!” she yelled.

The door flew open without waiting to find out who was behind it. The assumption was Daniel returned.

“Wow!” her partner, Jake exclaimed, eyeing her up and down. “I’ve never seen you take chances like that. Did you decide you were invincible or something?” He pushed by her, a bag of bagels in one hand and a tray of coffees in the other. “Did you even look through the peephole to see who it was?”

“Maybe.” He was right, of course. Taking chances like that wasn’t one of her finest moments. She’d enjoyed being off the job too much. A peek inside the bag he’d left on a table was enough. None of them looked appetizing. “I thought you weren’t coming until tomorrow.”

“Plans changed,” Jake answered, his mouth filled with danish. “The marks are already here. I followed them with Sam.”

“Sam?” Sara ran back to the door, opening it to find their third team member standing there. “Come in. You should have said something.” The girl was quiet, but who stayed quiet after having a door slammed in their face?

“I was going to,” Sam said, “but you two are too fast.” That was a lie. She was just shy. “Here’s the activity report.”

“Do you think she is here to pass off information?” Sara asked.

“No,” Jake answered, licking each of his fingers clean. “She’s with the guy she’s been squeezing.
